A recent Trailing Spouse blog post by the Trailing Geek caught my eye for a number of reasons; 1) it wasn’t just the ever so common re-statement of the problems we all face as Trailing Spouses 2) it offered solutions to problems 3) it was posted by a Trailing Spouse from academia, who is not an expatriate 4) it specifically addresses job search issues The Trailing Geek has moved with her partner to “Smallville” after leaving “Metropolis” so her partner can pursue her Ph.D. at “Pleasant U.” She embraced the Trailing Spouse situation and immediately did 3 things: 1. A sprightly happy dance. 2. Informed her employer at that time, Company X. 3. Started looking for jobs in Smallville. The point here is – immediately! So many Trailing Spouses leave their action for job search until after they arrive. Job searching takes time, it requires relationship building so it makes sense to start as soon as you know about your impending move…even if you don’t know where you are going. In the case of the Trailing Geek he knew where he was going and he knew what he needed to do. More specifically, notifying your current employer gets them on-board [...]

Trailing Spouse Network Member Dr. Nina Cole, an Associate Professor at Ryerson University in Toronto is currently researching what HR departments can do to help male spouses on international assignments. Her research team is hoping to recruit male spouses to be featured in an article that they are preparing for publication. They require a brief description of why you joined the Trailing Spouse Network and how it helps you as a male accompanying partner. If you are a Male Trailing Spouse and you would like to participate in this initiative, please visit the Trailing Spouse Network on LinkedIn and respond to the discussion on this subject. http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=104868 Thanks Jeff

Trailing Spouse? – What an unfortunate moniker for such a key role in the overall expatriate picture. The term implies personal baggage, giving the impression of someone who’s come along for the ride. It’s a far cry from the reality of it all. My wife and I enjoyed parallel careers in different industries in Canada for most of our working lives. However, like many things in life, opportunity can be indiscriminant and gender ignorant and in our case knocked on my wife’s well deserved door first with little warning. A colossal test for the male species, indeed. Say “yes” enabling your significant other to realize her true career and financial potential while giving all involved the adventure of a lifetime and exposure to a side of the world and a different way of life only accessible to most via the Discovery Channel. Or, let your male ego make the decision and say “no” keeping your lovely world status quo knowing that each and every day for the rest of your life you’ll be saying “should have”, “would have”, “could have”and wondering “what if”. So how hard could it be? My wife’s role was well defined and our three school age [...]

Surveys of the expat community consistently demonstrate that problems with spousal adjustment are the leading cause of early return home from expatriate assignments, which is costly in terms of repatriation and replacement of the expatriate, and in terms of company performance. One of the key factors affecting spousal adjustment is interruption or cessation of employment. Today I spoke with Dr. Nina Cole of Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada about her survey and report titled: Managing Global Talent: What do Expatriate Spouses Need? Dr. Cole traveled throughout the Asia-Pacific region in 2007-2008 and conducted a study on spousal adjustment. Download the interview or visit Talkshoe.com to listen to our chat with Dr. Cole as well as other talkcasts. The results of the study showed that spouses who experience a severe disruption or cessation of employment have significantly lower interactional adjustment with host nationals than other spouses. For spouses with an orientation to work, females had higher cultural adjustment (related to food, housing, medical care etc.) and interactional adjustment than males. What concerns me most in this observation is that the interaction adjustment caused by lack of employment potentially makes it more difficult to establish employment. i.e. a downward spiral. The study discusses [...]

The recently formed LinkedIn group for Trailing Spouse professionals has generated some interesting connections. Most recently, Bertrand Fouquoire, a fellow male trailing spouse located in France. I recently interviewed Bertrand and learned that he has been an expat in Saudi Arabia and Belgium, and a trailing spouse in the US, and currently on his way for another expat experience, once again as a trailing spouse to Singapore. This time with the project of developing coaching support to expats and spouses in France and Asia. Bertrand, like me is interested in assisting trailing spouses and other expat professionals in business and career aspects. He’s an HR professional with 20 years experience with large corporations and international deployments. He maintains a website whose aim is to help trailing spouses conciliate mobility and career. His website www.dualexpat.com is currently only in French, but a new version is being developed and will be available in English. Bertrand and I discussed his goals for dualexpat.com and some other thoughts on assisting trailing spouses and other expat professionals. Please have a listen and feel free to comment below. – Music for this podcast is from the ‘Walk in my dreams’ album by Endo, from Lyon in [...]
