The recently formed LinkedIn group for Trailing Spouse professionals has generated some interesting connections. Most recently, Bertrand Fouquoire, a fellow male trailing spouse located in France. I recently interviewed Bertrand and learned that he has been an expat in Saudi Arabia and Belgium, and a trailing spouse in the US, and currently on his way for another expat experience, once again as a trailing spouse to Singapore. This time with the project of developing coaching support to expats and spouses in France and Asia. Bertrand, like me is interested in assisting trailing spouses and other expat professionals in business and career aspects. He’s an HR professional with 20 years experience with large corporations and international deployments. He maintains a website whose aim is to help trailing spouses conciliate mobility and career. His website www.dualexpat.com is currently only in French, but a new version is being developed and will be available in English. Bertrand and I discussed his goals for dualexpat.com and some other thoughts on assisting trailing spouses and other expat professionals. Please have a listen and feel free to comment below. – Music for this podcast is from the ‘Walk in my dreams’ album by Endo, from Lyon in [...]

Just to keep our job search process on track, we started with the importance of NETWORKING. And for those of us in countries other than our home location, this can be pretty scary – finding where people congregate and getting involved with them to create your support group is more difficult with cultural differences, language limitations, and the normal ‘unknowns’. HOWEVER, don’t give up… make a list of who you DO know in your location – and contact them. The question is not “do you have a job for me” – but rather, “what do you know about working here?”. When people are asked about themselves and what they know, they are surprisingly willing to respond – people like to hear themselves talk! Of course, the follow-on question is: “who do you know that I can talk with?” When you take action, be sure to go back to your “source” and thank them – it’s something that can’t be overlooked. Just GET OUT THERE! EVERYONE knows someone – and those folks know others. Listen to The Trailing Spouse Network talkcast recording of this session on May 13 . Let us know what has worked for you – you can be [...]

The popular business networking tool Linked In (www.LinkedIn.com) has recently approved the Trailing Spouse Network. If you are already a Linked In member or you are considering Linked In, you are invited to join the Trailing Spouse Network @ LinkedIn by clicking here–> http://www.linkedin.com/e/gis/104868/236B280248B1 What is LinkedIn? LinkedIn is a networking site that enables people to build and manage (mostly) business connections in order to discover jobs, ventures, new clients, etc. Unlike typical social networking sites, its focus is business rather than social or entertainment. LinkedIn is emerging as a dominant networking environment for executives and professionals, and its development will be of interest as both an immensely practical tool and as a study of the social network phenomenon. Founded in 2003, LinkedIn crossed the chasm in 2007, as the company reports that thousands of people are joining per day. Today, it has more than 9 million members, and membership is very global. I’ve been a member since 2003 and have used it successfully to locate contacts for various business reasons. There’s a great independent review of LinkedIn features at The Global Human Capital Journal . We look forward to Linking In with you. – Jeff

The elevator speech is a recognized way of quickly and efficiently communicating what you do. There are some links below to some sites that help you put together an elevator speech, or marketing pitch, for yourself. A good elevator speech is important for any business owner or for that matter an individual who is always on the lookout for opportunities – aren’t all Trailing Spouses like that? These sites give you some ideas for getting your pitch started, but why not share yours with the community and see if we can hone each others pitch. Feel free to comment below. Have a think about what you feel your main areas of expertise are, usually 3 or 4, and build on these categories. Next, envision how an organization may leverage your expertise and how you may apply your knowledge and skills to the advantage of an organization. Remember, the person that you are marketing yourself to has one main question in mind- “what benefit will our organization gain from hiring this person?” Remember the radio station WIIFM – What’s In It For ME? If they have to analyze you to make this determination, unless you have a very high demand skill [...]

When someone is heading to a particular city as a Trailing Spouse, they ideally want to ‘tap into’ all available networks in that city/region. Not just internet sites but networks of people. We can all do that using the broader internet to find resources related to the city or region but as you know this can be extremely daunting and time consuming, with no guarantee that you will discover all of the available resources. The idea of a map based portal that takes you to a place that has all the things you need is worthy goal but most sites I’ve seen that attempt this fall short. Have you seen this site? http://www.expatwomen.com One concern that I have with this model is the burden of initially creating then maintaining the content. A model that I’ve considered on this front and would like to pursue is to assign people as Network Leaders in each of the cities. To articulate things better, what I’m ideally trying to develop is a network of people supported by a web site. Not the other way around as most sites I’ve seen. i.e. if a city doesn’t have a Network Leader it can’t be supported on [...]
