For those that know me and have worked with me, you will be aware of my passion for assisting unique and growing small businesses and for helping to identify and nurture potential business opportunities in domestic and export markets. I’ve recently incorporated USANZ Extended Marketing LLC to formalize these efforts by actively networking known and trusted businesses on my ‘RADAR’ with each other, and with evolving opportunities that I uncover. My goal, as always is to identify and recognize a potential opportunity and add value with little or no cost to the RADAR business. Where these or other opportunities lead to on-going relationships I seek to represent the organization for mutual gain. Under this premise, I actively promote unique American, Australian and New Zealand businesses through The Ausmerican, the USANZem blog, and through the Regional Business Talk Radio podcast programs. Readers who are aware of unique businesses in the USA, Australia and New Zealand are invited to submit details to the USANZem Business RADAR by clicking: SUBMIT If accepted, we look forward to working with you or the company to help identify and build export business opportunities for small and medium business. Thanks Jeff

I was interviewed recently by Gary Vaughan on his Collaboration Tech Talk podcast. The subject for discussion was the use of collaboration technologies in a telework situation and amongst other things we discussed the use of Blog Talk Radio in comparison to Talkshoe.com for podcast hosting. Both platforms provide a conference bridge to facilitate the call and both have a host control panel to manage the incoming callers. Features and content aside, I’m interested in audio quality and the listening experience. As a regular podcast listener, even if a program has very compelling content, I’m reluctant to listen to programs that 1: sound bad and 2: impose excessive or disruptive advertising content. On the second point, BTR imposes a 30 second pre-roll advertisement on the listener at a typically higher audio level than the host and caller. These adverts aren’t present on all programs so I assume it’s a host option? On the first point, I think the (audio) quality of podcasts is generally …and being diplomatic here, less than ideal. The adage of “content is king” only holds true to the extent that people will actually listen to it, and if the audio quality is bad, you will loose [...]

Whether it’s by choice or circumstance, more people are working in non-traditional work situations requiring that they be able to work from anywhere. I’ve had a great deal of interest in this subject since becoming a Trailing Spouse in 2001 and living and working in 5 countries over the last 9 years. It’s one thing to be a mobile worker and travel for days or weeks at a time, this requires discipline, skills and the use of various technologies, but to simultaneously pick up your whole life along with your work environment and move it to another country every couple of years takes another level of life / work / technology integration. One aspect of technology that I’ve embraced as part of this mobile work and portable career lifestyle is the use of spoken word audio to learn, inform and entertain while I do other things. An organization that has done a great deal over recent years to promote and share spoken word content is SpokenWord.org - This non-profit organization helps identify and locate spoken word content to make it easy to find programs of interest. I’ve recently been selected as a Curator of content for ‘Portable Careers and Working [...]

I listened today to a presentation by Gharmesh Shah co-founder and CEO of HubSpot, blogger at OnStartups.com, and author of the book Inbound Marketing. I’ve listened to the Audible.com version of the book once and will definitely be going over it again. To give you some insight into the book and where Gharmesh is coming from, have a listen to the presentation below. Although the focus of this talk is on Startup companies, and specifically online software companies, but it has a great deal of relevance to anyone with an online presence, isn’t that you? ..if not, why not? A few key points from the presentation: Risk: Assuming you have conceived your business or product, can you actually build it? Can you market it? Will anyone buy your product or service? He introduces a concept of smarketing (sales + marketing). Charge early. Start selling now! Not only because the revenue is important, it’s not at this stage, but the data from paying customers is exceptionally valuable. Sell often, because you want reliable, negative feedback too. Selling early tells you whether people will buy — selling often (i.e. charging smaller amounts in regular intervals) tells you whether they’ll stay. Let customers [...]

This week Sean takes a look at various Forums and Blogs suited to Expat Professionals, no music this week from the usual Jamendo.com selections …it was a busy week! You can listen to this weeks podcast here: First up Sean went back to the Expat-Blog.com site mentioned last week and made mention of the interview that Megan Fitzgerald of Career by Choice conducted with Julien Faliu, founder of www.expat-blog.com.

You can read about that interview by clicking here. Sean described OffshoreInvestment.com and their survey of business registration requirements in various parts of the world. There is no implication of “shady dealings” but solid information setting up a legitamate business in various parts of the world. Clements, the International Insurance company was also discussed refering to their Global Insight – Information, articles and news concerning international insurance and expatriate life. This blog although originating from an International Insurance perspective they provide valuable information for Expats. I made mention of relocation companies maintaining blogs for expats but in fact the blog that was coming to mind was jugglezine.com Not a relocation company and not an expat blog per se’ but does have a lot of useful information for Expat Professionals.
Well after a break of several months while my wife and I relocated from Prague to Wellington, New Zealand Sean and I are back with the regular Trailing Spouse Network Talkcasts on Talk shoe.com Listen to todays show here: On todays program we talked about some of the expat web sites that we’ve been looking at recently. Internations www.internations.org is a community based site for expats, locals and travelers with over 200 active communities in cities all around the world. A great resource for researching a location before you arrive and for building social and business contacts. While talking about Internations and researching potential overseas postings we reminded listeners about Talesmag www.talesmag.com a reliable resource of “Real Post Reports” and great stories from Tales from a Small Planet. Sean’s been looking at Expat-Blog.com and reports that it seems to be a good source of expat related blogs from around the world accesible by region. Blogs need to be registered with the site and they have rules to keep the content relevant. There is also a forum, not localized in any way and covers all sorts of expat issues. Certainly worh a look from time to time. Trailing Spouse Network member [...]

Do you backup your critical data? No really… do you? We all know we should but it’s one of those things that often gets put aside and come back to bite us when we least expect it. Today Sean and I spoke about various techniques and technologies to help you backup…and more importantly recover your data if it’s lost. Listen to the program here: News and announcements The TrailingSpouse.NET website is still under review. LinkedIn remains as an important tool to assist with connecting Trailing Spouse members.
This week Sean and I discuss The Four Hour Work Week, a book and lifestyle written and conceived by Timothy Ferris. Somewhat controversial, the book describes alternatives to our busy lifestyle. Those that have mastered this lifestyle, Timothy refers to as the New Rich…or the N. R. Is the “Four Hour Work Week” reality, myth or legend? Listen to the Netcast using this player or visit Talkshoe.com Tim Ferriss presents entrepreneurship as a tool for ideal lifestyle design and world change. His book has two parts: (1) Realize how you spend your time and (2) Identify and apply tools to restructure your life to get more satisfaction from what you spend your time on. I’m here today with Trailing Spouse Network regular Sean McKee to talk about the book and some of the concepts. – I’ve listened to the Audible version a couple of times. Both times I’ve felt mixed emotions, from absolute garbage to….maybe this guy has some good points. But on each occasion my interest has been held and I’ve taken away several ideas.
In the several years I’ve been a trailing spouse and on the lookout for the ‘ideal’ portable career or business I’ve met, not only people who work in this capacity, but also groups that exist to support the VA community. Being a Virtual Assistant, or VA means literally assisting other businesses or business people in a virtual capacity. The VA industry isn’t new but it continues to gain momentum as internet based communication and collaboration systems become more available, reliable and user friendly. For trailing spouses with the right kind of organizational and communication skills, a VA position can form the basis of a truly portable career. You can of course set yourself up as a freelance or standalone VA but those that have been most effective tend to be part of a network of VA’s. One such network and the group that has impressed me the most is Team Double-Click. Based in Colorado in the USA, this family based business headed by Gayle and Jim Buske assists around 50,000 VA’s in all parts of the world. This assistance comes in many forms to help the beginner get started through to helping seasoned VA’s build and maintain their business. Today [...]
