CMS of Choice – WordPress, Joomla!, Drupal or…?

Well I finally got around to reviewing the Ausmerican web site and in the process I’ve been looking at various Content Management Systems (CMS).

This isn’t intended to be a comprehensive analysis of CMS choices, but these guys can do that for you:

Over the last few years I’ve experimented with various open source platforms but I’ve settled on the three listed in the title of this article. These seem to be the preferences of many.

WordPress – For a blog or a simple page based site, WP is the best choice. It’s very simple and quick to get up and running. Themes are extensive, plenty of modules are available to increase functionality and its more than adequate for many applications.

Joomla! -For sites that require significantly more functionality or any serious degree of access control WordPress won’t cut it.

I’ve found the Joomal! to be extremely powerful and configurable but the concepts somewhat obscure. If your requirement utilizes ecommerce I’d recommend Joomla! with the VirtueMart extension.

Drupal - Drupal requires more effort to setup and generally requires more modules to be installed than Joomla! but I find the overall constructs much more logical. Drupal is the CMS if you need to do lots of customization. Definitely my current preference.

Here’s a more detailed article on this subject and I agree with the author: http://www.goodwebpractices.com/other/wordpress-vs-joomla-vs-drupal.html
